End-of-year activities are in full swing as the countdown to Commencement continues.
There will be a lot to celebrate May 15 as the college honors both the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021.
“We were so saddened last year when the pandemic forced us to alter all our end-of-the-year events, especially Commencement,” said Dr. Karen Aubrey, Vice President for Academic Affairs. “We were determined to find a way to highlight the accomplishments of the Class of 2020 this year, and decided on a joint ceremony.”
The event will be held at 8:30 a.m. at Callaway Stadium. Because of the need for social distancing, tickets for guests will be required. All graduates will receive five tickets for guests, and tickets can be picked up from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday on the library plaza, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. May 3-6 in Room 210 in Smith Hall, and immediately following rehearsal May 14 at the stadium.

Meanwhile, events next week will help usher in May 15’s festivities.
The Undergraduate Research Virtual Poster Session will be streaming again this year, with this link going live at 10 a.m. Wednesday. It will remain open until 5 p.m. Friday. Alumni and friends are encouraged to log on to view the event.
“We are excited that this year will feature a question-and-answer session with the student authors between 1:30 and 3 p.m. Wednesday,” said Dr. Christi Hu, Director of Undergraduate Research and Associate Professor of Psychological Science.
“Anyone with a college email address will be able to post questions, and the students will be available for responses.”
The poster session is an event hosted by the Undergraduate Research Program. Students who complete research with faculty mentors can display their work and talk with attendees.
Honors Day recognitions also will be going live Wednesday.
“We had a very positive experience with last year’s virtual event, so we’re doing it again,” said Dr. Jon Ernstberger, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Math professor. “The nice thing about these online events is that anyone can watch from anywhere, especially those parents, family and friends who couldn’t come to campus for the actual event.”
Students who receive departmental awards and scholarships from across the campus will be announced during Wednesday’s presentation. Also, recipients of the John R. Hines Jr. Undergraduate Research Awards, the Waights G. Henry Jr. award and the inaugural Pillar Awards will be recognized.
Also going virtual, the Nurse Pinning Service will stream at 7 p.m. May 13.
This year’s Baccalaureate service will be online at 5 p.m. May 14, with the Rev. Dr. Jessica Terrell ’03 as speaker. She is superintendent for the Central West District of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Spiritual Life will host “Grief, Hope and Gratitude: A Finals Week COVID-19 Memorial Gathering” at 8 p.m. April 29 on the library plaza. “This will mark the end of our journey through a challenging year, and to remember those lost to the COVID-19 pandemic since March of 2020,” said the Rev. Dr. Adam Roberts, Chaplain and Director of Spiritual Life. “We will have music, readings, prayers, silence and more than 560 luminaries for every 1,000 lives lost in this country from COVID. We’ll end with words of hope for the future.” White luminary bags will be distributed from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. April 26-29 on the plaza. The end-of-the-semester “Late Night Breakfast” will be served afterward.
Commencement tickets will be distributed from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday on the library plaza, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. May 3-6 in Room 210 in Smith Hall, and immediately following rehearsal May 14 at the stadium. The ringing of the Chapel Bell is a new tradition offered only to graduating seniors to celebrate a first full-time, post-graduation job offer or admission to grad school. Dr. Pomeroy-Black and Dr. Cauthen will welcome questions from the audience. Open only to LC students, faculty and staff. Seating is limited, and all health and safety guidelines will be enforced.

Golf
The Panthers had two golfers named to the USA South All-Conference team. Senior Cameron Starr was a first-team selection and junior Jay Adams was named to the second team. Starr is currently ranked fourth in the Golfstat NCAA Division III rankings.

Men’s Tennis
LC placed three players on the USA South All-Conference West Division teams. Seniors Caleb Edde and Kyle Kelley were named to the first team, while sophomore Al Robertson was honorable mention.
Baseball
Sophomore Cael Chatham was the USA South Player of the Week after leading the Panthers (15-7, 7-1 USA South) to a three-game sweep of USA South rival Maryville last weekend. Chatham batted .692 with two home runs and 13 RBIs in the three games. He garnered another weekly honor as he was the honorable mention Hitter of the Week on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association NCAA Division III National Players of the Week team.

Softball
LC (3-9, 2-8 USA South) lost 6-2 and 9-3 to Wesleyan in a USA South doubleheader Wednesday at the LC Softball Complex. Sophomore Maggie White was 3-for-6, including a home run, to lead the Panthers.

Men’s Lacrosse
The Panthers (0-6, 0-3 USA South) lost 25-5 to Piedmont last Sunday at Callaway Stadium. Freshmen Tripp Floyd and Michael St. John each had two goals for the Panthers.
